There were better schedulers than Calendly. Calendly won anyway. Because the product was the advert.
Doodle existed. So did a dozen tools, some slicker. Tope Awotona bootstrapped Calendly in 2013 with about $200k of his own savings. No big launch, no ad budget for years.
Here is the move that won. Every time a user sent a Calendly link, the recipient saw the badge. Powered by Calendly.
So every meeting booked was a tiny advert to a brand-new person. The product distributed itself.
By 2021 that loop had helped it to 10 million users and a $3 billion valuation. Bootstrapped for eight years first.
The lesson is not build a scheduler. It is build distribution into the product, so using it spreads it.
