Arc was the best browser in a decade. Its own makers just walked away from it.
In May 2025 The Browser Company put Arc in maintenance mode and moved every engineer to a new product. Months later Atlassian bought the company for $610M, for the team, not the browser.
The CEO's explanation was one phrase: the novelty tax.
Arc asked people to relearn the tool they use most, for too little reward. It never passed a few million users. Chrome has billions.
The lesson for anyone launching against an incumbent:
You do not beat a default by being better. You beat it by being so clearly worth the switch that relearning feels easy.
Better is not a wedge.
What default have you never managed to quit?
The move. You don't beat a default by being better, you need a wedge worth the switching cost.
