The click had a 20-year run and it is ending faster than most teams admit. Forrester reports that 94% of B2B buyers now use AI in their buying process, up from 89%, and they name AI their single most meaningful research source, ahead of vendor sites and sales reps.
For two decades the internet ran on one transaction. You made content, a person clicked, you counted the click, you optimised for more clicks. Every metric, every tool, every content strategy assumed the click was the moment attention converted into a visit. That assumption is quietly breaking.
Here is what changed. When a buyer asks an AI about your category, they read the machine's summary of you. They do not read your page. The model already crawled your site, your reviews, your third-party mentions, and it hands the buyer a synthesised answer. The buyer often decides who to shortlist without visiting a single site. The click never happens, but the decision does.
So the unit of distribution shifted. It used to be the click. Now it is the mention. Whether the model names you, describes you accurately, and places you among the good options matters more than whether someone lands on your homepage. Getting linked is fading. Getting quoted is everything.
What does this change about how you publish?
You stop writing for the click and start writing to be quoted. That means specific, checkable claims a model can lift cleanly. Clear answers to the exact questions buyers ask. Named numbers, defined terms, plain statements of what you do and who you are best for. Content built to be extracted, not just to rank and hope for a visit.
It also means your reputation off your own site matters more than ever. Models weigh what other trusted sources say about you. A mention in a piece the model trusts can do more than a page you fully control. This is the deeper shift behind the metric that quietly died: the click is no longer where distribution happens.
If your content strategy still ends at and then they click, you are optimising for an internet that is already leaving. What are you publishing that an AI would actually quote?
