The citation gap is the distance between the questions your buyers ask an AI and the answers where your brand actually shows up. For most B2B companies that gap is brutal: you appear in a thin slice of the prompts that matter to you, while the strong brands appear in nearly all of them.
Every category has a set of questions that precede a purchase. Best tool for this. Alternatives to that. How do I solve this specific problem. Buyers used to type those into Google. Now a growing share type them into an AI and read the answer it composes. The citation gap is how often your name is missing from that answer.
Here is why the term matters. SEO trained a generation of marketers to think about ranking: are we first, third, or on page two. Ranking assumes you are on the page at all. The citation gap is a harsher measure. It asks whether you are in the room where the decision happens, or whether the model formed its shortlist and never mentioned you.
The danger is that this loss is silent. You can have the best product in the category and lose every comparison you never knew was running. No lost-deal report will show it. The buyer asked an AI, got three names that were not yours, and moved on. You were never in the consideration set, so you never registered the defeat.
How wide is your citation gap?
You can size it in an afternoon. Write down the ten questions a buyer asks before they find you. Ask each one to ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Count how many name you, and where. The percentage that leave you out is your citation gap, and for most companies the first look is uncomfortable.
Closing it is the new distribution job. It means publishing the specific claim that answers each question, getting cited in the third-party sources models trust, and doing it across engines rather than one. It is slow and it compounds, which is exactly why so few brands have started. That connects directly to whether the AI even names your brand when someone asks about your category.
Steal the term, then go measure yours. Do you think you are in the room when an AI answers your category?
