At Ahrefs, 0.5% of visitors arrived from AI search and drove 12.1% of signups, a conversion rate roughly 23 times everything else. Seer reported the same shape at a B2B software client: ChatGPT traffic converting near 15.9%, Google organic under 1.76%.
Read those numbers twice, because they invert how most teams rank their channels. A source responsible for a rounding error of your traffic can be responsible for a chunk of your revenue. If you sort your channels by volume, this one sits at the bottom and gets no attention. If you sort by intent, it is the top of the list.
The reason is not magic. It is context. Someone who clicks a link inside an AI answer was just told, by a machine they trust, that you are the answer to the exact thing they asked. They do not arrive to browse. They arrive to confirm. The pre-selling happened before the click, inside the model's response, in a moment you never saw.
Compare that to a Google click. On search, the buyer sees ten blue links and clicks with suspicion. They are still comparing, still skimming, still deciding whether you are worth their time. On AI, the comparison already ran and you won it. That is the difference between 2% and 16%.
Why do so many brands miss this channel?
Because it is invisible in the tools they check. It looks tiny in the analytics dashboard, so it gets no budget and no thought. Meanwhile the brands that show up inside AI answers quietly collect the highest-intent visitors on the internet, and most of their competitors are completely absent from those answers.
The move is to stop ranking effort by traffic volume and start ranking it by what converts. Find the questions your buyers ask an AI before they buy. Publish the specific, citable answer to each. Get named in the sources those models read. You are not chasing more clicks. You are chasing the few clicks that arrive already convinced.
This is the opposite of the volume game most content teams still play. It is closer to the logic behind CAC being a creativity problem: the cheap growth is not more spend, it is showing up where the decision actually forms.
Would you trade 90% of your traffic for traffic that converts 20 times better?
